So it is day 5 of this mission trip. And we are having fun and working hard. We have worshipped, played, and challenged each other to do things that we might not at first be comfortable with: like sealing a roof, or putting in flooring in a bathroom. I continiue to be impressed with the creativity and caring of our kids. Yesterday evening we had a very serious and thoughtful discussion about the families with whom we are working and our responses to their circumstances. I wish that you parents and church members could have listened in to a very profound discussion that was poingniant, faith-full, and real.

I can't wait for you at home to have the opportunity to talk with these youth and to hear first hand their learnings and growth. Many of them have already called this a spiritually enriching experience which has changed them. We have not decided yet, how we will 'report' back to you who have been so supportive of this mission trip, but we will do that in the next day or two--and let you all know.

I think that a significant reinforcer of the learnings which occur on such an experience as this, is when we integrate it through discussion and prayer which we have had here, and through sharing what we have learned when we return home. It is such a privilege to be part of these young people's growth in faith by sharing the love of God with people in vastly different circumstances than all of us live in.

Hey Everyone!
Izzie and Caroline here. We are currently on the worksite at Muleshoe Estates, the trailer park we have been at all week. The main jobs we've been assigned consist of priming and painting Sarah's trailer, initially cleaning the outside with bleach. Sarah is such a great hostess. She is not only constantly telling us how thankful she is, but she provides us with water and iced tea to quench our continusous thirst because the temperature is insanely hot and the sun is trying to give us all skin cancer. Between reapplication of sunscreen and working our tails off we have fun playing with the girls whos families were helping and the most adorable, precious little dog ever named Daisy. Lunch is always the same, made every morning before breakfast. Ehh...breakfast is OK. We wont dwell on the lack and quality of the food were forced to eat, but we'll survive. Trips to Walmart Superstore let us stock up on edible items. After working we usually go either shopping or out to ice cream, and then return to the "resort" and go swimming in the indoor pool with the hot tub and then its off to dinner. Dinner isnt bad, we've had the usual, hambergurs, hotdogs, pizza, pasta, though last night they "forgot" to make us dinner and we were forced to sit in our starvation for 3 more hours than necessary. We werent happy. After dinner is a little bit more hang out time before we hed off to chapel...which in our opinion is pretty rockin. The first day was a bit awkward and tiring, however, once we started participating and expressing extreme enthusiasm we now find it as a major highlight in our day. Curfew is 10:30, and we literally must be in our rooms or the Christian police (Team effort couselors) herd us back to our condos. Today is the last of work, as tomorrow we will spend our day at the waterpark, and Saturday a 9HOUR ride home. But overall this is an incredible experience and we're both having a lot of fun. See you all in 2 days!

When we first arrived at Blue Knob, things seemed very different from Madison. At our first chapel service, we noticed that all of the other groups were very into the music while we quietly exchanged glances of confusion. But after our councelor Victoria challenged us to up our game, we found ourselves dancing on tabletops and rocking out to the Christian jams. We went from the silent observers to the wildest kids in the room. The next day at breakfast, someone standing behind us commented on how our enthusiasm "broke his eardrums." Speaking of breakfast, the food proportions and quality are sub par. However, our group trips to Super Walmart has held us over. We've stocked up on more food than any human could possibly consume because it's such a "GREAT VALUE." We've made new friends from the other groups who we run into from time to time and exchange an "oh hey what's up" with. We spend our free time chilllin' in the pool/hot tub and ninja climbing into other people's rooms. During our lunch break we have a dance party with Victoria, Ashley, and Chloe where we jam to Hannah Montana and T-Swift. We've also meet Sarah whose house we've painted gray with candy appple red shutters. We've tried to make some phone calls home which is hard with the spotty reception, but it doesn't mean we won't miss you. So tonight, dinner will be awesome because we're going to a Mexican Restaurant so Adios!

hi. The long excrutiating car ride was better once we jammed out to Aaron Carter and Backstreet Boys. Once we got here, we soon realizezed that the food is nice and cold, but thats what the super walmart is for. Buying mac n' cheese and bagel bites made everything okay. Besides the cold food, everyone is very "modest" here, well not the kids just the crazy camp directors. Also, missing the Harry Potter premiere and lil wayne concert was kind of a downer. Although missing those events were kind of disappointing, its great to know that we are doing something good for someone else rather then for ourselves. In a way it is for ourselves. We get a new prospective on life. I thought that everyone living in these trailer parks would be unfriendly and maybe even rude but they truly aren't. Everyone that we are working for has been amazingly greatful, kind, and even generous. One girl that really caught my attention was Ashley.She is 12 years old and is pretty, smart, and greatful. She is always smiling and is very willing to talk to us. The first day we saw her, she was in her window looking at. I peered behind her and i noticed the clutter around her, and the crammed bedroom space that she shares with her 15 year old brother. Although her living conditions, she still was smiling and very welcoming. She showed us her cats, Angel.and Tiger. I did not meet her mother but i breifly met her brother who was also very kind. I'm so happy we met them, they made ME smile. Me and some other girls were talking about sending a carepackage with candy, clothes, and cute things that they may need like hair brushes and flip flops. I'm so glad i met these girls they were amazing to talk to and I wouldn't change anything, EVEN for Harry Potter. kay bye!

So, at this point, I’m sure the only thing you are wondering about is if your kids are alright.

Well, I can tell you that they are all holding up very well. They are working hard and making an impact on people’s lives.

They are making a difference!

I don’t want to understate the fact that there is hard work being done here. And they are doing it well. But the real impact they are making is with the little extras they do – the things they do without probably even realizing they are doing it.

There is a little girl here who has profound physical (and probably learning) difficulties. She will end up in a wheel chair someday probably soon, but for now walks with some difficulty and loves the human contact she gets from the kids, who are always eager to hold her and play with her. It’s sad to see someone, especially a child, who is deteriorating like that. Where everyday is worse than the day before, but it is the high point of her life compared to what the next day will bring. She is getting all the care, love and attention she can handle from your kids. Her sister is a few years older and loves Hanna Montana, Disney princesses and dancing to her CDs. One afternoon, as the kids were gathering for lunch, she was on the porch of the trailer next door and yelled over “Are you ready for some music?” The kids gave a less-than-enthusiastic “Yea” to her question, to which she responded, “I can’t hear you! Are you ready for some music?” The kids let out a rousing “Yea” and the music started blasting! She couldn’t contain her excitement when three of the girls from our group joined her on the porch and started dancing with her. There have been other little things they’ve done for the little girls – like buying them band-aids when they noticed there were none in the house (so now the oldest one walks around with band-aids waiting to assist anyone with a scratch!) A couple of the girls from our group even bought her a few CDs for her collection. The boys have been just as helpful and caring, they just aren’t dancing on the porch – although yesterday, when they could have stood around waiting for supplies, they started making a dog house out of scrap wood for the girls’ dog Daisy. (I got to tell you, this is a sturdy dog house – a lot of thought and care went into it – and if there is a heavy storm in the area, I suspect some people will be running to the dog house for cover!)

There is a woman whose roof was reinforced and trailer painted by the kids. She told me that a few months back she woke up in the middle of the night terrified that her leaky roof would collapse and her trailer would be ruined. She keeps the place well manicured and clean, but it was in desperate need of paint and repairs. “These kids are the answer to my prayers!” she said. Again, though, along with the hard work – these kids are leaving a lasting impression with the “Good Morning” greetings, hugs, asking about her life and the smiles and caring. When she mentioned that her front door light was not working – which was a problem given that the light keeps people away who want to steel her lawnmower – a handful of the kids chipped in and bought her a new light complete with a motion sensor to scare away any intruders. She looked overwhelmed that someone would think to do that for her.

The funny thing is about these kids – and I’ve noticed it on all three of the mission trips I’ve been on – is that this is something they just do. There is never a “hey look at me” aspect to any of what they do. They are just welcoming and caring in their actions. And people will remember their actions. They will remember the summer when those kids from Connecticut came down and painted their trailer, helped build a wheelchair ramp, fixed their roof, and danced with their kids on the porch.

And, as an aside, they have been great role models for the younger kids they meet.

You know, I’ve only been on three of these trips, and each time I felt it was a life changing experience. It is refreshing. Invigorating. Not the work or the driving. It always amazes me how much work the kids do; how much they want to help others. The thing that stays with you is the look on the faces of the people they help – the look like they just had a prayer answered. The look like their life just got better because of what the kids did. They look like someone just put an arm around them and said, “It’s OK – we care!”

I could take a week’s vacation and go anywhere and see some cool things and hang out on a beach or do a music search in a cool city – but I will never forget the three summers I took vacation time just to have the privilege of working with your kids and to watch them have such a positive impact on those around them.

So, to end my rambling and get back to my original question: are you wondering if your kids are alright on this trip. The answer is “Yes” – they are alright and have restored a lot of people's faith in humanity!

So far, over the course of just a few days, we have made new friendships and accomplished a lot more work than we thought was possible. We expected it to be hard, gruly work but when we got here we found that along with the somewhat difficult labor, it was very rewarding and fun. At first we were unhappy about the room assignments and that some of us wouldn't be rooming with our friends but were actually suprised when we made new friendships and got along well with our roomies. We became closer by bonding over the disgusting, minimal food we recieved and singing Backstreet Boy throwbacks. Chapel was also an interesting experience and much different than anything we have ever done. It included bizzare songs that we had to sing to and a different style of worship that we came to enjoy it instead of dred it. We are enjoying our time here although our "resort" is anything but, and we think it is fair to say that getting out of Madison and helping others has been good for us and we would definately come again!

While i write i can bearly hear over the hammers, intense music, and the random splatters of paint that distract me wherever i go. I just climbed off the roof so im sweatng like crazy. Within to days i washed a roof, double coated it with silver sealant, which by the way only comes off with mayonaisse, paint thinner, or peanut butter, and now im roll roofing and these little dots are on my arms because before it goes on i had to pull out 60 nails and all the original roll roofing had us dogding dust and rocks all over the place. But in the end its all worth it. The house we are working on is occupied by an adorable little girl named Ashley. She has two adorable kittens, Angel and Tiger, to die for! Then right next to them David, full time dad and security guard, has two daughters, caida and victoria. They are so cute and now so is their house :). So much has happened in this past week that i could barely fit it into a small blog, ill write a book later in life. All i have to say is this week has been life changing, and i cant wait for next year. <3

I came into this trip, not knowing if I really wanted to go because the people were going to be a little more "conservative" with their views. I almost didn't come. I went into it thinking that it was going to be horrible. I however, am starting to think that it is one of the best things I have ever done. I have roofed, painted, built, become silver, and have been inspired. I am growing in my faith and learning from others with different views than I. I miss those I love at home but I will also miss the people that I leave behind here; there is so much more to do here. So many need help and if I could stay here for longer, I think I might. This trip is changing my life.

This is my first mission trip. Who knew it would be so much fun. Although they food is sub-par at best, the daily trips to wal-mart let us get our own snacks. I never thought I would enjoy wal-mart as much as I do now. One highlight of the trip is the chapel service that we attend every night. At first, we were hesitant about the service and when we got there we could tell that our youth group was a little different than the others. Each of the other groups knew the lyrics to each song we sung and our group was a bit shy. However, last night, we out-sung the other groups and had a great time. Hopefully the enthusiasm will continue and we will have the time of our lives. I think I have to get back to painting, but experiences such as smearing mayonaise all over our bodies and a few of us getting "dress-coded" will definitely make this a trip that I will never forget.

Today is wednesday and I have been working for two days. This trip has been a spectacular experience thus far. Besides getting in trouble for taking off my shirt, the extremly small meal proportions, and waking up at 6:30 every morning it has been a lot of fun. The indoor pool is quite the pleasure to the senses. We have made it a ritual to stop by at wal-mart everyday to get food,drink, and other essential items. A dog house is beckoning too be built so I must bid all my fans out there farewell. Hopefully we can talk soon I love you all ;)

Hi this is our post. This is our third day working here in the Mule Shoe trailer park. We've been working on three trailers, Sarah's, David's and Derrel's. David has two daughters, the one in the picture is named Victoria. Derrel has a daughter named Ashley who is holding the dog, Daisy. It's been really great here, the weather is always hot which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. We like working on the roof...just not with sealant. It's disgusting and gets all over you until we were totally silver. The dog bites.

Well…we arrived! After seven long hours and four bathroom breaks, the North Madison Congregational Church Senior Youth Group arrived at Blue Knob Resort in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This was no easy feat, let me tell you, for this resort is conveniently situated atop a 3,145 foot mountain that can only be reached on a long and winding road. And boy did it certainly live up to its reputation of being a “resort”. The seventies-esque architecture complete with mustard carpets, leaking showers, and moldy wallpaper reassured us that we would definitely be stepping out of our “Madison comfort zone” this trip. As the night approached, we found ourselves traveling to the tippity top of the mountain for chapel. Fifteen songs, four bible verses, and two hours later our group was free to roam around the resort until our 10:30 PM bedtime. Well, by the time we got out of chapel it was 10:25 so we had just enough time to get back to our rooms and collapse in our beds, preparing ourselves for our 7:00 AM wake-up call.

Groggy and delirious, we dragged ourselves out of bed to eat breakfast 7:45 AM. Two mini sausages, breakfast biscuits, and some soggy eggs were plopped onto our plate…a real continental breakfast. Not to mention that our youth group, one of the seven, were conveniently given the last breakfast spot in the morning, so that meant extra cold eggs and sausages for us. Luckily Carter Chatillon and I had purchased some hot sauce at a gas station near Penn State and managed to drown out the lack of flavor in all food items given to us. Unfortunately, we used it all up after the second meal.

Post breakfast, our group headed out to a worksite 20 minutes away to begin our mission work; a trailer park with a multitude of odd jobs for us to complete. We were introduced first to Dave, a single parent with two beautiful daughters, Victoria and Caida, ages seven and four, respectively. The group before us had installed a ramp in the front of Dave’s home for Caida, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy, so we were given the task of painting the exterior of the home, installing flooring and carpeting in the house, and tarring the roof. From there we proceeded to work on two more homes, priming, painting, hammering, sealing, building- we basically covered every sort of construction-related job one could imagine. Maggie Lussier and I, growing tired of priming our second house, proceeded to write a rap about Jesus. The opening line being, “J-E-$-U-S he’s chillin’, Jesus is his name and he ain’t no villain.” Around three o clock we called it a day and headed to the Wal Mart Superstore, complete with a Subway and hairdresser. We bought everything from Pizza Bagels to Luna Bars, stocking up for the busy week ahead of us. After the magical adventure through Wal Mart, we returned to base camp to swim, nap, shower, and get ready for another wonderful meal prepared by TEAMeffort. The majority of the showers were either scalding or frigid, never seeming able to find a happy medium between the two extremes. We ate, we prayed, we searched for the indoor pool, and went to sleep…Lord ONLY knows what tomorrow will bring.

Hey There Bloggers J

My name is Victoria Sneyd, and I am currently your group’s worksite leader here in the beautiful area of Blue Knob, PA! I realize that most of you do not know what that entails, therefore I will give you a brief overview….basically I supervise, designate jobs, answer questions, obtain needed supplies, and lead a short devotion in the mornings which constitutes a verse or two and a prayer.

I want to start off by saying that I absolutely adore the students and leaders here that have become my adopted family for the week! They have now been working for two days and they have yet to stop working. They also have maintained such positive and Godly attitudes even though some of the jobs have been disgusting, tiring, boring, and time consuming. That in itself is such a blessing, because whether they notice it or not people are always watching them and how they interact with each other through the heat and the long days of hard labor. It reminds me of one of my favorite verses for the summer from 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT) which states, “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” This group has definitely put this verse into practice this week and it has been encouraging to myself to be able to work alongside them.

I must take a second, however, to be a tad less serious and tell you what is REALLY going on here at this worksite…your staff leaders are the BOM DIGGITY! They are very inquisitive about a lot of things but I have found that I love the questions because they show that they want to do the best job possible and that takes a huge load off my shoulders to be able to put trust in them. However, I was scared when they first arrived because the first thing that “Dr. J” told me was that he thought he was passing a kidney stone…needless to say he is perfectly fine two days later! Today, also a few of the guys decided that they wanted to make every single wasp in PA angry…And if I have to hear about how much they wish they could take their shirts off one more time!!!!! J I’m just kidding though; it hasn’t really bothered me at all. The girls are all becoming professional painters…so parents, if you need any painting done you shouldn’t need to hire professional help J Alright I’m running out of time, but I really do love this group and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for them for the rest of the week and then into the rest of their summer!

Reflections on Day 1

A post from the boys in 1204 (Andrew C, Andrew H, Dr. Jay, John A, Jack K, Mark K, Mr. Kane Will B):

Well today was our first day of actual work and we all felt pretty good about it. As opposed to previous mission trips, our entire youth group went to the same work site, a set up which we enjoyed. For the next week we will be working in a trailer park outside of Altoona.

Today we began work on three seperate trailers:

1. David is an single father who is raising two daughters, one four years old, Kaida (Caita?), and one going into second grade, Victoria. Unfortunately, David's younger daughter suffers from cerebral palsy as well as epilepsy. In the past weeks, other groups constructed a ramp for their trailer, as it is expected she will soon be bound to a wheel chair. Our group has been finishing up odds and ends, including painting the trailer, fixing the flooring and carpeting, and repairing the roof.

2. Next door lives a single mom with several children. A number of us helped to repaint her trailer today.

3. Across the park lives an older woman who needed a new set of stairs leading up to her trailer as hers had begun to rot away. We also washed her trailer to prevent molding, repainted the sides, and re-tarred the roof. We also began construction on an enclosure for her air conditioning unit. She sat outside with us all day and kept bringing water and lemonade while she chit-chatted.

We are looking forward to seeing what else we can do tommorow. Dear mom, send food.

Some of you have heard that I was in extreme pain on our trip down here. I woke up in the middle of Sunday night in the horrific abdomenal pain of what I have experienced before: kidney stone! By morning it had gone, but about an hour out of town as we began the trek here, it hit me hard. I was in so much distress that I could not think straight and was thankful that I did not have to drive. OTC pain meds were not touching my pain. But thank God for the prayers, the concerns, the text messages, the expressions of caring from kids and adults, and the internet searches for hospitals. And thank God for tylenol with codeine--offered by one of our adults. By the time we arrived I was pain free, but somewhat 'space-y' This morning I am feeling worn out from the struggles with the pain yesterday, but pain free. My hope is that the stone has passed--rather than sitting 'dormant'. The worst moments for me yesterday were thinking that my medical issue was going to become a distraction from the purpose of our trip: serving people in need and growing close to each other as a group. At some point last night I realized that our kids were already doing that--partly because of their concerns for me. I am so grateful to be with these special young people.

After a great send off by parents and the Christian Education Board - we embarked on our 9 hour journey to Central Pennsylvania. We arrived safety, had our first meetings, had dinner courtesy of Subway and are ready to start working tomorrow on three homes.
